AI roll-ups, tracked

Firms that buy traditional services businesses and run them with AI. 6 in our directory, plus the public deals that set the scale. Updated October 27, 2026.

6

of 170 AI-native services firms say they buy or invest in traditional firms. The others do not.

What is an AI roll-up?

An AI roll-up, also written AI rollup, buys several traditional businesses in one fragmented trade and runs them on a shared AI platform. The aim is the same work with fewer hours, so margins rise and fund the next purchase. The buyer keeps the licensed professionals, and clients still deal with an accountant, auditor, lawyer or broker.

It sits between two things that get mixed up. A software company that sells AI tools to firms is not a roll-up. A new firm built on AI from day one is not a roll-up either. A roll-up buys the existing practice, with its clients and staff, and rebuilds how the work is done. Software holding companies that buy software businesses are a separate group and are left out of this tracker.

L40's AI rollup transaction index lists six platforms and is described by its publisher as selective, not exhaustive. General Catalyst, an investor in several of these buyers, describes its strategy in The Future of Services and says its Creation Fund grew from $800 million to $1.5 billion between Fund XI and Fund XII (source).

Why it matters for buyers of services

If your accountant, auditor or law firm has been bought by an AI roll-up, the licensed professional is usually the same person and the tools behind them are new. Ask who signs off the work, which regulator covers the firm, and whether fees change. If you are choosing between a firm built on AI and one that was bought and rebuilt, see the lists for AI-native accounting firms and AI-native law firms, and who is hiring for accounting and legal roles.

Questions

What is an AI roll-up?

An AI roll-up (also written AI rollup) is a company that buys several traditional businesses in one fragmented trade and runs them on a shared AI platform, so the same work needs fewer people and the margin goes up. The trades in this tracker are services: accounting, audit, legal work, mortgage broking. The buyer keeps the licensed professionals and changes how the work is done.

How is an AI roll-up different from an AI-native law firm or accounting firm?

A de novo AI-native firm is built from scratch on AI. A roll-up buys an existing practice, with its clients and staff, and rebuilds it. On AI Native Map, 6 of 170 firms (4%) fit the buy-and-rebuild model, so most firms in the directory are not described as buyers.

Which AI roll-ups are there in services?

In our directory: Limetax, Wilshire Intelligence Network (WIN), Modus, Lawhive, Eudia, Elio Mortgage. Public deal lists such as L40's AI rollup transaction index cover a broader set, including software holding companies that AI Native Map leaves out.

Which trades are being rolled up first?

In our directory Tax & Accounting (3), Legal Services (2), Banking & Finance (1). In all of these a licensed professional signs off the work, which is why buyers keep the staff and change the tooling.

Are AI roll-ups hiring?

2 of the 6 have open roles on a job board we can read, 20 roles in total on October 26, 2026: Modus (12), Lawhive (8). See the hiring tracker for the role mix.

How is this tracker built?

From our own directory of 170 firms and from public statements linked in each row. A deal figure appears only where the buyer, the target or a named source has published it, and is shown as announced. See the methodology.
