What are AI-native services?
AI-native services companies sell the finished work, not a tool. They use AI to do most of the job and keep qualified people accountable for the result.
The short definition
A traditional software company sells accounting software to an accountant. An AI-native services company is the accountant: it files the return and is paid for it, with AI doing most of the preparation and a licensed professional signing off. The same pattern shows up in law, insurance brokerage, recruiting, fund administration, healthcare operations and procurement.
How the terms relate
- AI-native services (AINS): named by Emergence Capital in 2024. This is the term we use.
- "Service as software": the framing in Foundation Capital's 2024 essay "AI leads a service as software paradigm shift".
- "Services-as-Software™": a phrase HFS Research says it launched in 2024 and has trademarked. We mention it here only to describe the concept; AI Native Map has no affiliation with HFS Research.
- "Autopilots": Sequoia's term in "Services: The New Software" (2026): copilots sell the tool, autopilots sell the work.
Common business models
- Fixed fee per matter or deliverable (common in AI-native law firms)
- Subscription for ongoing work (bookkeeping, outside general counsel)
- Per outcome or placement fee (claims processed, hires made)
- Roll-ups that buy traditional firms and run them on an AI platform

FAQ
What are AI-native services?
Companies that sell a finished service, such as a contract, a tax return, an insurance policy or a completed hire, and use AI to do most of the work, with professionals reviewing and staying accountable for the result. The customer buys the outcome, not a software tool.
How is that different from SaaS?
A SaaS company sells a tool and the customer does the work. An AI-native services company does the work itself and is paid for the outcome, often with fixed fees, subscriptions or per-outcome pricing instead of billable hours or seats.
Is this the same as 'services as software'?
The ideas overlap. Foundation Capital wrote about 'service as software' in 2024, and HFS Research uses 'Services-as-Software', which it has trademarked. Emergence Capital named the category 'AI-native services' (AINS) in 2024, and Sequoia described AI 'autopilots' selling the work in 'Services: The New Software' (2026). AI Native Map uses 'AI-native services' as a neutral descriptive term.
What are examples of AI-native services companies?
AI-native law firms (e.g. immigration and contract firms), AI accounting and tax firms, AI-native insurance brokers, recruiting agencies and back-office providers. See the full directory.
What is an AI roll-up?
A company that acquires traditional service firms, such as accounting practices, and runs them on its own AI platform, rather than starting a new firm from scratch.
