What is a fractional general counsel?
A fractional general counsel is a lawyer or legal team that acts as a company's in-house counsel part time, for a recurring fee, instead of a full-time hire. AI law firms use software for first drafts so lawyer time goes to review and advice.
Agile Counsel, for example, offers outside general counsel to startups and VC-backed companies (source), and Omnilex offers a general counsel service at fixed prices for companies without their own legal department (source).

Firms that quote their subscriptions
Fellow, Agile Counsel, Omnilex, Founders Law Club and Blue Tide offer ongoing counsel but do not publish a monthly price. Each quotes the plan after learning what the recurring work looks like.
| Firm | What the firm says | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Agile Counsel | Outside general counsel for startups and VC-backed companies | Source |
| Blue Tide | Retainers for growth-stage companies alongside per-contract prices | Source |
| Fellow | Custom subscriptions for recurring work, aimed especially at pre-Series B companies | Source |
| Founders Law Club | Membership with monthly legal counsel and discounted rates | Source |
| Omnilex | General counsel service at fixed prices for companies without a legal department | Source |
Which plan fits which stage?
Firms aim their entry plans at pre-seed and seed companies and their higher tiers at companies with a steady flow of contracts. Match the plan to how many legal tasks you send each month.
OneGC positions Starter for pre-seed and early-stage companies and Growth for startups with growing commercial needs (source). Falcon's tiers are set by the number of tasks a month (source), and Fellow says its subscriptions work especially well for pre-Series B companies with repetitive legal needs (source).
What subscriptions usually leave out
Most plans cover routine contracts and questions, and price larger matters such as financings or disputes separately. Check the add-on prices as well as the monthly fee.
OneGC sells fixed-fee add-ons for specialised matters (source). Lexsy charges credits for lawyer work on top of its membership (source), Soxton discounts contracts rather than including them (source), and StartupTechLaw members still pay a discounted hourly rate (source).
Subscription or flat fee per matter?
A subscription suits a startup that sends legal work every week; a flat fee per matter suits one that needs a few documents a year. Several firms let you start with single matters and move to a plan later.
Compound Law sells both fixed-price outcomes and subscriptions (source), and Shepherd offers a fixed-fee option next to its monthly plans (source). Per-matter prices are compared on the flat-fee startup lawyers page.
FAQ
How much does a fractional general counsel cost for a startup?
Published AI law firm plans run from $149 a month (Inhouse) and $199 a month (StartupTechLaw) to $999 to $1,999 a month at OneGC, and from €1,000 to €10,000 a month at Falcon and Compound Law in Europe. Prices were checked on 20 October 2026.
Is a fractional general counsel the same as an outside law firm?
It overlaps. A fractional general counsel handles day-to-day legal work on a recurring fee, often with a named lawyer, while a firm hired per matter bills each piece of work separately.
Can I cancel a legal subscription?
Terms vary. StartupTechLaw has a two-month minimum, and Falcon's plans are annual and invoiced monthly. Check the firm's terms before signing.
